Accessibility
Everyone will experience permanent, temporary, or episodic impairments over their lifetime either personally, or through caring for someone else. By focusing on accessibility, we can work towards becoming a municipality where every person is able to participate fully and equally and is empowered to pursue the life they wish to live.
In 2021, the Province of British Columbia passed the Accessible BC Act requiring municipalities to develop a plan that addresses accessibility to municipal services, programs, and infrastructure.

Accessibility Plan
To improve accessibility in our community, the Town of View Royal has completed a Accessibility Plan. The Plan identifies and addresses barriers people experience with our:
- Information
- Communications
- Technologies
- Policies
- Practices and
- Infrastructure
The Plan is a major step in our long-term goal of striving towards becoming a barrier-free community. The Plan focusses initially on employment and service delivery – the first two of eight accessibility standards identified in the Accessible BC Act – and will evolve over time to incorporate the other six standards.
The Plan will be reviewed and updated every three years.
Accessibility Committee
In 2023, View Royal Council approved participation in the Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee, an intermunicipal committee including representation from the City of Colwood, Township of Esquimalt, District of Highlands, City of Langford, District of Metchosin, and the District of Sooke.
The role of the Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee is set out in the Accessible BC Act – to assist the municipalities by identifying barriers to individuals in or interacting with the municipalities and to advise the municipalities on how to remove and prevent barriers to individuals in or interacting with the municipalities.
Meetings of the Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee are open to the public and written feedback may be provided as outlined below.

Public Participation & Feedback
A critical part of monitoring and updating the Accessibility Plan is receiving valuable feedback from people experiencing barriers. We also rely on insights about practical, 'on the ground' improvements that could be addressed through regular Town operations. Your input is always welcome and appreciated. By sharing your experiences with the municipality, you help us identify barriers and enhance accessibility for everyone.
We invite your feedback in the following ways:

Accessibility Surveys (Complete)
Surveys were conducted seeking public feedback on experiences accessing services provided directly by the partner municipalities. Survey #1 asked the community how and where they would like to participate in engagement related to accessibility. Survey #2, titled “Accessibility & You”, focused on specific issues and challenges faced by respondents when accessing services and employment opportunities with the partner municipalities.
